Over the years we have watched customers buy a horizontal lathe for long shaft work and then fight it for the first year. The machine arrives, the salesman's numbers look fine, and only when the first long part goes on does the truth come out: the bed flexes, the tailstock walks, or the spindle bore is too small to pass the part through. The problem is rarely the brand. It is usually that the spec was chosen from a brochure instead of from the parts that will actually run on it.

The Two Numbers That Decide Most of Your Day

For between-centres work, two numbers on a horizontal lathe matter more than any marketing line: bed length, or the distance between centres, and the spindle bore. A shaft that extends past the chuck needs support from a steady rest or a tailstock, and a part that runs through the bore absorbs length you would otherwise have to manage with extra rests.

Seven Checks We Now Run Before We Sign Anything

1. Check the bed construction and ground ways. A slab or box bed with hardened, ground guideways holds a long part far better than a lighter frame. Ask where the ways are ground and how they are supported.

2. Confirm the spindle bore and headstock bearings. For feed-through shaft work, the bore size and the bearing arrangement decide what the machine can actually carry. Verify the bore against your longest through-part.

3. Run a test bar for runout. Any serious builder can show you a test bar under a dial indicator. Ask for the numbers at the spindle nose and again at 300 mm, then again along a long bar.

4. Machine a sample part, not a demonstration. A sales demo shows easy material. Ask for your own part or a part of your material, end to end, and measure the result.

5. Inspect the build during fabrication. If you can visit, look at the castings, the scraping, and the wiring before assembly. If you cannot visit, ask for photos and a pre-shipment inspection report.

6. Put the control and service plan in writing. The control is only as good as the support behind it. Confirm who answers the phone in your time zone and what the response time actually is.

7. Agree on packing, rigging, and any customs support. For ocean freight to the US and Latin America, a well-packed machine arrives square and level. We once had a customer skip the foundation survey, and the machine rocked on a soft slab for a month before we solved it.

What the First Machine Taught Us

We learned most of this the hard way. A gear shop in the United States once ordered a CK6180 for long pinion shafts and only discovered during commissioning that their existing steady rests were two sizes too small for the new bed. It cost them a week of downtime and a re-order of tooling they had not budgeted for. That is exactly the kind of gap a pre-shipment checklist is meant to catch, and it shaped how we now walk customers through foundations, tooling, and rests before a machine ever leaves our floor.

We learned most of this the hard way. Early on, we quoted a CK6163 to a customer in Indonesia for long pump shafts. The spec was fine on paper, but we had not checked their existing tooling height, and the first setup ate a full day of their machinist's time. The fix had nothing to do with the turning: we rebuilt their tool block carriers and re-checked the tailstock alignment, and the machine has run clean ever since. The lesson stuck with us, and it is why we now ask about tooling, fixtures, and existing skills before we recommend a model.

Another time, a customer in Colombia turned long rolls for a paper mill and was losing tolerance at the tailstock end. It was not the machine; it was a worn tailstock centre and a soft foundation. We sent field notes, they re-leveled, and the roll TIR came back under spec. Those experiences taught us that a horizontal lathe lives or dies by the support around it, not just the iron.

Match the Machine to the Part, Not the Brochure

The same parts question applies up front. Material that is long and slender, like shafts, rolls, spindles, and axles, belongs on a CK6 horizontal lathe lineup between centres. Material that is short, heavy, and wide, like flanges and ring gears, belongs on a vertical lathe, where gravity settles the part flat on the table. Shops that see both ends of it often run one of each in the same cell.
