Vertical lathe can be seen at a glance
  1. Control “brain”
The CNC vertical lathe carries an “electronic brain”—a CNC system. The operator turns the drawing into a program, and the machine follows the steps automatically. The conventional vertical lathe relies on a “human brain”—the machinist turns hand-wheels, engages clutches and watches dials; the whole process is manually directed.
  2. Accuracy and repeatability
Every move on the CNC machine is locked in by pulse increments of 0.001 mm or finer, so batch parts come out like photocopies. On a manual machine, hand pressure, eyesight and room temperature all matter; today’s part may be ±0.1 mm, tomorrow’s ±0.2 mm.
  3. Tool change and multi-operation work
A CNC turret holds 8–12 tools; one program command swaps them automatically—turning, boring, grooving, chamfering, all in a single setup. On a conventional machine there is only one tool post; changing tools means stopping, loosening screws, re-setting the tool, and re-establishing the datum every time.
  4. Part complexity
With two-axis interpolation a CNC lathe cuts arcs, curved surfaces and tapers as fast as the math can run. A manual lathe needs form tools or templates; anything more complex is simply “beyond the drawing.”
  5. Productivity
Once the program is proven, a CNC machine can run lights-out 24 h a day. A manual lathe is one operator, one machine, hand-feeding cuts; the chips glow red while the operator stays put. Output is counted “parts per shift.”
  6. Investment and threshold
CNC lathes cost more and need skilled electronic maintenance, but cost per piece drops sharply in volume. Conventional lathes are cheap and fixed with a wrench, yet when order volumes rise, labor and scrap eat the profit.
In short:

A CNC vertical lathe is a precision, high-efficiency device that brings its own brain, changes its own tools and follows a program. A conventional vertical lathe is a traditional machine that relies on human hands and eyes, cutting one pass at a time; the two belong to entirely different eras in terms of accuracy, efficiency, automation and cost structure.
